Sweetly tender, yet powerfully written, Axtell’s (Moonlight Masquerade) latest inspirational Regency romance, set against the glitz of London just prior to the Battle of Waterloo, enchants and delights as it follows a young couple’s path to love. Heart-sore and angry, vicar’s daughter Jessamine Barry is finished with matters of romance. After the gentleman with whom she had an unspoken understanding reveals his love for another, Jessamine agrees to travel to London for a season in hopes of leaving her heartache behind. A chance encounter with newly returned missionary Lancelot Marfleet, who is also second son of a baronet, plants the seeds of hope her reluctant and rebellious heart. However, overcoming her previous failed relationship and navigating the ton prove to be almost insurmountable challenges, especially when she is introduced to her former suitor’s new wife. The novel’s message blooms beautifully with nuanced storytelling and subtle, yet honest, characterization that chronicles the timeless journey through love and faith. The message of faith is woven through the narrative, interconnecting with love in a rich, relatable manner. Agent: Chip MacGregor, MacGregor Literary.

Jessamine Barry thought a season in London would be the perfect solution to all of her romantic woes. Getting away from her home in Alston Green and the memory of Rees Phillipswho apparently didn't really love her, since he has managed to marry another womanwill allow Jessamine's broken heart to heal, as well as provide her with the opportunity to meet someone new. Unfortunately, the first gentleman in London to give Jessamine a second glance is the totally unsophisticated, very earnest Lancelot Marfleet. Recently returned from a two-year religious mission in India, he is smitten with Jessamine, even if she won't give him the time of day. However, when Jessamine becomes involved with a gentleman whose rakish reputation promises trouble, Lancelot must find a way to convince her that he really is her knight in shining armor. Relatable characters and good use of period details (including some fascinating snippets about botany) come together nicely, making Axtell's novel an excellent choice for both inspirational romance fans and traditional Regency romance devotees.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
