From award-winning sportswriter John Feinstein, The Prodigy is a YA novel about a teen golfer poised to blaze his way into Masters Tournament history—and he'll face secrecy, sacrifice, and the decision of a lifetime to get there.
Seventeen-year-old Frank Baker is a golfing sensation. He's set to earn a full-ride scholarship to play at the university of his choice, but his single dad wants him to skip college and turn pro—golf has taken its toll on the family bank account, and his dad is eager to start cashing in on his son's prowess. Frank knows he isn't ready for life on the pro tour—regardless of the potential riches—so his swing coach enlists a professional golfer turned journalist to be Frank's secret adviser.
Pressure mounts when, after reaching the final of the U.S. Amateur tournament, Frank wins an automatic invite to the Masters. And when the prodigy, against all odds, starts tearing up the course at Augusta National, sponsors are lined up to throw money at him—and his father. But Frank's entry in the Masters hinges on maintaining his standing as an amateur. Can he and his secret adviser—who has his own conflicts—keep Frank's dad at bay long enough to bring home the legendary green jacket?

A teenager faces the exhilarating--and dismal--prospect of becoming a golfing phenom.Having made the previous year's U.S. Amateur semifinals, 17-year-old Frank vows to do even better this time around--and so he does, persevering through challenges and distractions to qualify for the Masters at Augusta National. Meanwhile, Frank's determination to attend college and the cautionary example of Tiger Woods and his greedy, domineering dad notwithstanding, his divorced father has fallen into the clutches of a bottom-feeding agent who is steering him toward forcing his young phenom to turn pro. Though the phrase "suspenseful golf action" may strike most readers as cognitive dissonance, Feinstein (Backfield Boys, 2017, etc.) does a good job of driving his tale down the fairway by putting his protagonist through a series of spectacular feats and comebacks on real courses and filling out his cast with actual renowned golf pros, journalists, and officials. Along with laying in generous measures of golf's jargon, and elaborate rituals of play as Frank rolls along to the Masters' final round, the author tees off on the sport's checkered racist and sexist history as well as unsavory corporate sponsors and the money-grubbing NCAA. Frank remains heroically above all of that, though...particularly after a climactic act of sportsmanship leaves him on the moral high ground. The book follows a white default. All in all, well below par...in the very best sense. (Sports fiction. 11-13)

Almost-seventeen-year-old Frank Baker is a golf prodigy poised for college. Frank's ambitious, hard-driving father, however, wants him to turn pro immediately. Frank resists with the help of his high-school coach and a former pro-golfer turned journalist. The engaging story is filled with on-the-green action and jargon, which are targeted toward golf fans, but the unexpectedly high drama should draw in others, too.
